The 3 photos above are by courtesy of Mr. Bruce Constable and are of the pre. WW1 Amphion.
She is seen sinking, in the 3rd photo above, after hitting a mine laid by the "Konigen Louise", on 6th. August 1914.
- 2 days after WW1 was declared. -
This killed my Grandfather in the process, and placed him amongst the first to die in WW1.

The 3 photo's above are from my own collection and show my Grandfather, "William John Tolcher", in the centre of the group on the left smoking his pipe.
The centre photo is at home on his last leave with my Uncle Bill before WW1.
The right hand photo shows my Grandmother in "Mourning clothes" after hearing of his death with her 3 children at the time.
My Auntie Iris is standing beside her along with Uncle Bill, and my mother, at 5 years old, is sitting on her left.
As was the common practice, at the time, my Grandmother then later took in an "Orphaned boy" and adopted him.
He later became my Uncle Len. All are now sadly deceased.
As a rather "maudlin" postscript, I have often compared the photo of my mother, at 5 years old,
with that of my eldest grandaughter when she was of the same age.
The likeness is astounding, as are some of my grandaughters mannerisms!
